The following are transcriptions of John Jackson Lewis’s diary and journal of his voyage to California in 1851. He was travelling from New York to visit his older brother William in San Jose.
This morning went with my friends Gushee and Barker to the office of the P.M.S.S. Co. and bought a steerage ticket for $150. Took my baggage to the beach about noon, and after waiting some time, a boat was engaged, and we went on board the Tennessee. The bay was very smooth and the ride a pleasant one. The Tennessee is a large, strong vessel, her steerage are roomy and comfortable. Got underway at 4 ½ A.M. (probably should be P.M.) and some excitement was created on board by a contest between our…
